Antenna tilt coverage calculator: how down-tilt changes a cell footprint

What a down-tilt calculation tells you

An antenna tilt coverage calculator estimates where the main lobe meets the ground and how the predicted signal footprint shifts when total tilt changes. It is most useful when a sector is overshooting, when a nearby area needs stronger service or when an engineer must explain an adjustment before the site visit.

A simple geometric estimate starts with antenna height and tilt. The real footprint also depends on vertical beamwidth, antenna pattern, frequency, power, terrain and clutter. Treat geometry as a fast sanity check; use a coverage map to see the complete prediction.

A practical workflow before changing a sector

  1. Record the current site coordinates, height, azimuth, beamwidth, band and EIRP.
  2. Calculate the current coverage and identify the overshoot, weak zone or overlap to solve.
  3. Create a second scenario with the proposed total tilt.
  4. Compare the main lobe, sector edges and terrain-shadowed areas.
  5. Choose field points near the expected gain and expected loss areas.
  6. After the change, validate with measurements and retain the inputs in the report.
